The M2's lid is a small mechanism doing a big job. Every time it opens, a ball bearing rides a channel, catches a detent, and either holds or releases depending on a few grams of resistance calibrated to almost nothing. Get it right and you don't think about it. Get it slightly wrong and it's the only thing you think about.

The original M2 got it mostly right. But mostly right, lived with for months, starts to drift. The ball bearing setup that felt precise on day one could shift loose or shift tight over time, and either direction was frustrating in its own way. Customers told us. We felt it ourselves.

Here's the part we didn't expect. Diagnosing the problem honestly, a lot of paths opened up that had nothing to do with the slide. A hinge. A different opening action entirely. On paper, some of those made a lot of sense; they would have sidestepped the whole problem instead of solving it.

We didn't want a different lid. We wanted this lid to work.


There's something about the slide, specifically, that's hard to put into a spec. It's how you get in and out of the device, and it turns out that motion is most of what people mean when they say they love the M2. So instead of designing around the problem, we dug in on it. The harder, slower path: keep the mechanism, make it right.

That meant solving for something less tidy than "does it open." A dugout lives with loose material, residue, daily handling, pocket lint, all the grime of actual use. The question wasn't just can this lid close. It was can this lid still feel exactly right on day two hundred, under real conditions, not lab ones.

The first instinct was magnets. We'd already used them once, in the cleaning tool head, replacing a press fit that worked great until it didn't, a design that could be thrown off by a margin too small to measure by eye. Magnets solved it elegantly there. So the question became: could magnets solve the lid too?

Above are six of the configurations we tried (from among 30 others). Different magnet strengths, different placements, a stretch where we explored a magnet-only mechanism entirely. Getting the resistance right turned out to be its own kind of physics problem. Too weak, and the lid could open in a pocket. Too strong, and the snap felt aggressive instead of satisfying. The right answer sits in a narrow band between smooth and sturdy, and it does not announce itself easily.

Eventually we landed on a combination: the original ball bearing and channel, now paired with magnets tuned to work alongside it rather than replace it. Getting that channel's depth, angle, and catch point right, in concert with the right magnet strength, is most of why this update runs six months behind our original timeline. We're not going to pretend that's nothing. But we'd rather be six months late and right than on time and back here again in a year.

Most of what we chase in this product lives in service of things you can't fully qualify. The feel of a slide. The weight of a close. We may come back to this specific problem in more detail later, the ball bearing chapter alone deserves its own writeup. For now: the new mechanism is built, it's in production, and it's the most deliberate part of the Next Generation M2.

will there be a way to upgrade existing to use the top that works? i dont use mine anymore because the gasket keeps getting stuck. had to take a hammer to it to get it open, between the gasket and stickiness of flower it’s almost like superglue. love your product but can’t use the dugout. do use the titanium pipe frequently though. love it
